Backyard putting greens
A putting green has short, dense putting turf over a firm, compacted base, with fringe turf around it if you want to chip. We build backyard greens around Austin and Central Texas, sized and shaped to fit your yard.

Putting green costsWhat goes into a backyard putting green
We remove the old grass and soil before building the base. HomeGuide recommends class 1 or 2 permeable base rock, compacted for a stable foundation. We spread and compact that rock before the putting turf goes on.
Putting turf differs from lawn turf in pile, or fiber height, and face weight. One manufacturer’s spec sheets list a 0.5-inch pile and 34 ounces of face weight for its putting turf, compared with a 1-inch pile and 50 ounces of face weight for its lawn turf. Face weight means ounces of fiber per square yard, and the putting turf’s sheet calls for less infill at 0.5 to 1 pound per square foot. We cut in fringe and fairway turf around the green so you can practice chip and pitch shots as well as putts, and we set cups and flagsticks where you want them.
Picking a size and shape
HomeGuide calls greens of 100 to 400 square feet small, 401 to 2,000 square feet medium, and 2,001 to 3,000+ square feet large. HomeAdvisor uses nearly the same size breaks, and its figures show a higher cost per square foot for smaller greens.
Shape affects the work, too. HomeGuide says contouring, extra fringe and fairway cuts, and features such as bunkers can raise labor by 20% or more on complex greens. HomeAdvisor and Angi put extra labor for more fringe and fairway cuts at up to 10%. When we measure, we’ll mark out the shape and cup positions with you on site.
What a putting green costs
HomeAdvisor’s 2026 figures put a backyard putting green at $15 to $40 per square foot, with a normal project range of $3,500 to $9,000. The putting green costs break down prices by size tier and cover yearly upkeep.
Keeping a green rolling true
HomeGuide says turf built for golf greens needs minimal maintenance, including cleaning, minor repairs, and replenishing infill, the material between the turf blades. HomeAdvisor says regular cleaning, occasional brushing, and prompt repairs keep a green in shape. Clear leaves and debris with a leaf blower or plastic rake. Never use a leaf vacuum because it pulls out the infill.
With proper maintenance, HomeGuide says most backyard greens last 10 to 15+ years. HomeAdvisor puts a green’s lifespan at five to 15 years.
What to have ready
Before we measure for a green, have a spot in the yard in mind and a rough size for it. Think about how many cups you want, and decide whether you’d like fringe for chipping or a putting surface only. We also need to know how equipment and base rock would reach that spot, so check the width of the gate they’d pass through.

FAQ
Putting green questions
How big should a backyard putting green be?
Make your backyard putting green as big as your space and budget allow. HomeGuide’s small size band runs from 100 to 400 square feet. HomeAdvisor’s 2026 figures put greens under 400 square feet at $25 to $40 per square foot and greens from 400 to 2,000 square feet at $20 to $30 per square foot, so the per-foot cost drops as the green grows.
Can a putting green take chip shots?
Yes, a putting green can take chip shots with the right turf around it. HomeAdvisor says turf with long, durable fibers supports chip and pitch shots with consistent accuracy. Fringe and fairway cuts around the green give you places to chip from, and HomeAdvisor puts the extra labor at up to 10%.
How long does a putting green last?
HomeGuide’s 2024 guidance says most backyard putting greens last 10 to 15+ years with proper maintenance. HomeAdvisor’s 2026 range is five to 15 years, depending on materials and upkeep. Cleaning, brushing, prompt repairs, and infill top-ups help determine where a green lands in those ranges.
Does a putting green need infill?
Yes, a putting green needs infill, though it uses less than a lawn. One putting turf spec sheet calls for 0.5 to 1 pound per square foot, while Angi puts a lawn at about 1 pound per square foot. HomeGuide includes infill replenishment in a green’s yearly upkeep.
