Artificial grass for dogs
A dog yard has to handle urine, digging, and summer heat. We install pet turf and dog runs around Austin and Central Texas with backing that drains quickly, odor-control infill, and a layout you can hose down.

What pet turf adds over a regular lawn, from drainage to zeolite infill.
Pet turf costsHow pet turf differs from a regular lawn
Pet turf drains liquids through quickly. Its backing is either punched with drainage holes or fully permeable, so ask which type you’re getting. Some pet turf has an antimicrobial agent built in to cut odor. Angi says non-toxic, pet-friendly turf sometimes costs a little more.
For the infill, ask about an odor-control option such as zeolite, which absorbs odor and controls ammonia. One pet turf spec sheet calls for 2 to 2.5 pounds of infill per square foot, compared with about 1 pound per square foot for an ordinary lawn. The base underneath is the same compacted crushed stone or decomposed granite used for a lawn, so urine drains down through it.
Odor, drainage, and cleanup
Urine drains through turf, but Angi says it can leave a strong odor if it’s left to dry, so rinse spots with a hose before they dry. UC Master Gardeners says pet waste can’t break down and soak in as it does in soil, so pick it up promptly. Angi says crumb rubber and sand infill hold urine odors more. Zeolite absorbs odor and controls ammonia, and infill with antimicrobial properties also helps.
Pick up solid waste daily and rinse the spots your dogs use. Every so often, wash those spots with a mix of water and vinegar or an enzyme-based turf cleaner. HomeAdvisor says a sprinkler zone over a dog area makes rinsing easier than using a hose.
Heat and your dog
Angi’s 2026 pet turf guide says turf absorbs much more heat than grass, so it’s harder to keep a dog cool in summer. Dogs can burn their paw pads on it.
UC Cooperative Extension’s Janet Hartin reported in 2024 that home synthetic lawns in Palm Springs, California, reached 173°F. Spraying turf down cools it, but Penn State’s sports surface researchers found that the cooling lasts about 40 minutes. The pros and cons guide sets five surface temperature studies side by side.
What pet turf costs
Angi’s 2026 figures put a pet turf installation at $3,000 to $7,800, with an average around $5,420. The pet turf costs breakdown covers zeolite infill, labor per square foot, and how long pet turf lasts.
What to tell us about your dogs
Tell us how many dogs you have and how big they are, since that affects how we lay out and build the area. Let us know where they go now, whether it’s one corner, a run along the fence, or the whole yard, and point out whether they dig or chew and where. Tell us which parts of the yard get afternoon sun. We’ll also need to know where the nearest hose bib is because the area gets rinsed often.

FAQ
Pet turf questions
Will my dog's urine smell on turf?
Yes, your dog’s urine can smell on turf if it dries there. Angi says urine drains through turf and leaves a strong odor if left to dry, so a weekly hose-down keeps odors from developing. This Old House’s 2026 guide says zeolite infill absorbs odor and controls ammonia.
Can dogs dig through artificial grass?
No, dogs can’t dig through correctly installed artificial grass, according to Angi’s 2026 pet turf guide. Angi says the material is very tough, and a dog is also less likely to rip up or chew the edges.
What infill is best for dogs?
Zeolite or another infill with antimicrobial properties is a good choice for dogs. Lawn Love’s 2025 guide says antimicrobial infill is a must if pets use the lawn as a bathroom. Angi’s 2026 pet turf guide says crumb rubber and sand hold urine odors more, and Angi’s 2026 figure for zeolite is $1.15 per pound.
How do I clean dog waste off turf?
Pick up solid dog waste and bag it. For cleaning turf, Angi’s 2026 pet turf guide says to wash the spot with a dish soap and water solution, then hose it off. Lawn Love recommends a pooper scooper and warns against using a leaf blower on pet waste.
