What Central Texas yards need

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension in Travis County describes I-35 as a rough dividing line between the Edwards Plateau to the west, where thin soils sit on limestone, and the Blackland Prairies to the east. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says Blackland clays are deep and dense, absorb water very slowly, and shrink and swell as moisture changes, heaving fence posts and patios. On clay, we look at where water goes before we put in the base because a yard that already holds water may need a drainage system.

NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for Austin Camp Mabry put the average high at 96.6°F in July and 97.8°F in August. Sunlit turf can run far hotter than the air. UC Cooperative Extension measured home synthetic lawns at up to 173°F in California, and City of Austin Watershed Protection staff note that turf lacks the cooling effect of water evaporating from soil and plants and can be as hot as concrete. Where kids or dogs play, we talk through shade and how they’ll use the area.

Rebates, HOAs, and city rules

Austin Water’s WaterWise Landscaping rebate is for replacing healthy grass with water-wise landscaping. Austin Water’s guide lists artificial turf as “Not eligible for the rebate” under that program.

Texas Property Code section 202.007 bars an HOA from prohibiting “drought-resistant landscaping or water-conserving natural turf.” The section doesn’t mention artificial or synthetic turf, so your HOA’s own rules decide whether you can install it. Get your HOA’s approval before the turf is ordered. The cost guide’s rebates and rules section covers these same facts and San Antonio’s coupon.

FAQ

Service area questions

Do you install outside Austin?

Yes, we install in Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Hutto, Lakeway, Bee Cave, Dripping Springs, Buda, and Kyle. We work across Travis, Williamson, and Hays counties. If your town isn’t listed, name it in your message.

Does my HOA have to allow artificial turf?

No, Texas law doesn’t require your HOA to allow artificial turf. Texas Property Code section 202.007 protects drought-resistant landscaping and “water-conserving natural turf” from HOA bans, but doesn’t mention artificial turf, and H.B. 2269, a 2025 bill that would have barred HOAs from requiring living grass, died in committee. Your HOA’s rules and approval process apply, so get written approval before you order turf.

When is the best time of year to install turf in Austin?

We can install turf any time of year in Austin because it doesn’t have to root the way sod or seed does. Ground conditions matter more. Texas A&M AgriLife says Blackland clay’s biggest challenges are mud and dried areas resembling concrete, so we dig when the soil isn’t soaked.
